by Cees Nooteboom
The Dutch Nooteboom is one of the few true Europeans, not only a citizen of an European country. I think with All Souls Day he wrote the best book about Berlin of the nineties. A very intelligent writer who always has that philosophical view when his protagonists analyse their situation. In this book a man in his midlife crisis, with enough money, without great ambitions. In several time levels the protagonist tells the story of his life. As frame he uses his erotic adventures and the influence of two solitary man in his life: a father and his son. I just enjoyed the wisdom and perfection of the writing less the story itself which is nevertheless never boring. The book helped me to stand the flight from Recifé to Berlin.
