by Alessandro Baricco
The subtitle is: The fairy-tale about the nature of the sea. And that’s what it is: a very poetic book about the sea. The sea is the star, some strange people have just an supporting role in this plot. There is a painter who paints with sea water only, a scientist who writes an encyclopaedia about the limits of things – here the ocean, a young woman who cannot die nor live, a man who survived ship wreckage, an old admiral who registers exceptional events on the ocean an keeps selfishly tales about Timbuktu to himself.
Actually it is really hard to describe what this book is about. I recommend it heartily. Maybe even more his book “Silk”, which I read a couple of years ago.
