As I wrote in a previous summary: I became addicted to this writer, I should really read other Brazilian literature as well! It is another book witch chronicles. It reaches from the fall of the Berlin wall to a short autobiography at the end of the book. At the time of the fall of the Berlin wall he had his second “scholarship” at the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and was located in Berlin. really lucky for a writer to be in loco. I guess the Berlin story was the reason why I could not resist to buy it.
The chronicles are written in his typical style of black humour, cynicism and surprising turns. There is always something to learn about the Brazilian society and at the same time it is somehow universal since he targets basic human behaviour or stereotypes. O romance morreu means the novel is dead. How often was it declared dead? He explores each of those occasions and comes to a different conclusion. Apparently, since it is the same phenomena on which others claim the “novel is dead”. The novel is not dead, only the reader.
