by Rubem Fonseca
I had to read something in Portuguese in order to preserve my vocabulary. As always, in front of my bookshelf and in doubt, what book to pick, I opted for Rubem Fonseca my favorite Brazilian writer.
A thriller as you would expect from Fonseca. The seminarist if a professional killer, who gets its jobs from “The Dispatcher”. He does not ask questions, does his job exceptionally professional, and does not read the newspaper after the job is done. The book starts with description of various jobs he had done, then he decides to retire. With the retirement trouble starts: he falls in love with a German woman, it turns out, that she was set to spy on him for her father, who is “the Dispatcher”. But she fails by falling in love as well. Then he is warned by an old fellow from the priest seminar, that he is in danger due to job he did once. He has to buy a new Glock to defend himself and his love. Killing people is, what he knows best. At the end he has a new dispatcher.
Cruel, funny, twisted. I am never disappointed by a Fonseca thriller.
