by Wilhelm Genazino
As critics say Genazino is the master of mediocrity, the title already implies the principal feature of the main character: completely average, lukewarm in anything he wants to be. Fortunately he has to face also some exceptional challenges: loosing first an ear, ten a toe. The high point is maybe that he falls in love with a criminal.
I think it can’t get more average than in this book. The average topic a characters populating the book are in good contrast to the mastery of Genazino. Not my preferred topics, but well written.
