by Mike Nicol
The first of the three detective novels I read during my holidays in Laos. Pure coincidence. In this novel I was interested in the after apartheid life in South Africa. The private detectives (or body guards) are former arms smugglers for the ANC. Today they are confronted with the new black middle class in Cape Town. Nicol’s analysis is pretty sad: the former freedom fighters think it is now their time to have a good life, they feel enabled and have therefore no sense of guilt in the highly corrupt and violent new South Africa.
