Mit sichtlich genauer Kenntnis der historischen Zusammenhänge sowie mit allergrößter Anerkennung für das Können von Hilary Mantel schreibt Rezensent Markus Gasser über diesen historischen Roman. Wobei er gleich jeden abfälligen Gedanken über das Genre als solches beiseite schiebt: Hier sei, und zwar erstmals und endlich, der historische Roman wirklich auf der Höhe der literarischen Moderne a la Virginia Woolf. Es geht in diesem Band, dem eine Fortsetzung folgen wird, um die Figur des Thomas Cromwell, der aus niedrigen Verhältnissen kam, Schatzkanzler erst, dann persönlicher Sekretär Heinrichs des VIII. wurde, um dann doch in jene Sorte Ungnade zu fallen, die zur Folge hat, dass der eigene Kopf auf einer Pike zur Freude der ganzen Stadt ausgestellt wird. Sehr viel eher als jüngere historische Literatur werde Mantel dabei der stets um Moderation bemühten Figur Cromwells gerecht. Literarisch sei das Drama von geradezu “shakespearescher Wucht” und darum eine dringende Empfehlung auch für jeden, der dem Genre sonst mit Skepsis oder schlimmerem zu begegnen pflegt.
