Er erzählt von trotzigen Menschen, die der Angst und Zerstörung ihre Selbstbehauptung und ihr Verantwortungsgefühl entgegensetzen. Seine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Krieg im Donbass findet mit seinem Roman “Internat” ihren vorläufigen Höhepunkt.
Ein junger Lehrer will seinen 13-jährigen Neffen aus dem Internat am anderen Ende der Stadt nach Hause holen. Die Schule, in der seine berufstätige Schwester ihren Sohn “geparkt” hat, ist unter Beschuss geraten und bietet keine Sicherheit mehr. Durch den Ort zu kommen, in dem das zivile Leben zusammengebrochen ist, dauert einen ganzen Tag. Der Heimweg wird zur Prüfung. Die beiden geraten in die unmittelbare Nähe der Kampfhandlungen, ohne mehr sehen zu können als den milchigen Nebel, in dem gelbe Feuer blitzen. Maschinengewehre rattern, Minen explodieren, öfter als am Tag zuvor. Paramilitärische Trupps, herrenlose Hunde tauchen in den Trümmern auf, apathische Menschen stolpern orientierungslos durch eine apokalyptische urbane Landschaft.

Rezensentin Kerstin Holm kann ihre Freude nicht verhehlen, dass Serhij Zhadan seinen Roman über den Krieg in der Ukraine beinahe optimistisch enden lässt. Zuvor allerdings, dass gesteht sie ein, gehen die Figuren im Text durch die Hölle. Zhadan malt sie laut Holm expressionistisch monumental, jedoch unsentimental aus, beklagt die Opfer des Konflikts und skizziert auch den Widerstand gegen die Verrohung. Für Holm ein subtiles Drama vor allem der russischen Sprache, die hier in verschieden klingenden Akzenten ihren Auftritt hat, und die Juri Durkot und Sabine Stöhr “vorzüglich” übertragen haben, wie die Rezensentin findet.
