“Bestens unterhalten” hat sich Albrecht Buschmann bei Carlos Ruiz Zafons “Schmöker” über den buchbegeisterten jungen Daniel, den die Aufgabe, ein Buch gegen einen geheimnisvollen Fremden zu beschützen, fast alles kostet, was er hat. Im Grunde ist die Geschichte ja recht simpel, bemerkt Buschmann, der Autor verstehe es aber, diese durch die Verschränkung mit zahlreichen anderen Geschichten gleichzeitig vielfältig und übersichtlich zu gestalten. Zum Lesevergnügen tragen laut Rezensent außerdem die zahlreichen literarischen Reminiszenzen sowie die Motive der klassischen Gothic Novel bei, das Ganze werde außerdem in einer “äußerst professionell umgesetzten” perspektivischen Erzählweise präsentiert. Die ornamentale Erzählweise, die nur im Spanischen nicht ungewöhnlich und “gut verdaulich” sei, habe der Übersetzer Peter Schwaar aber “glücklicherweise behutsam gedämpft, ohne Verfälschung des süffigen Stils”.
