by Marguerite Yourcenar
This novella is a dense play about love, rejection and despair. Actually it does not matter where and when it takes place. But it is put into troubled times, the civil war which followed the Russian revolution and the first World War. And the backdrop is a forgotten place somewhere in the Baltic states. One of the protagonists tells the story in a train station years later and depicts his role in the tragic events often worse than it really was. In fact this is a very well employed artistic mean throughout the novella that the reader can guess the reality just by taking into account that the story teller exaggerate, leaves out and twists a bit the truth.
