Another book within the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” edition of great novel of the 20th century. And another book that just introduced me to a writer, that I wouldn’t have read at all. I am amazed how much good books exist besides the well known mainstream.
It is a crime story that is brought to court. Departing from the questions raised in the courtroom we learn about the complex personality of Deruga. He is accused to have killed his divorced wife to get her fortune. he is not truly trying to be cooperative, and sets his own ethic standards. Normally people would like to be very likable in front of a judge, he doesn’t even do that.Everybody has his own opinion, and the case is also viewed from many different angles in private encounters of lawyers, prosecutors, journalists, friends, and enemies.
The book is about moral and about its evasive nature to set absolute standards.
